Passengers were boarding their flight from New York (JFK) to Miami (MIA). This flight was a 
Lockheed L-1011 TriStar. light 401 took off on the evening of December 29, 1972, carrying 176 people. Shortly after takeoff, the crew noticed that the nose landing gear indicator light failed to confirm that the gear had fully retracted. The pilots became preoccupied with troubleshooting the indicator, leaving autopilot partially disengaged. 

During this distraction, the aircraft gradually descended without the crew realising it, eventually impacting the Everglades near Miami.
